As the global call for environmental improvement, climate action, and sustainable development intensifies, energy transition has become imperative. Leveraging over a century of technological expertise and innovation, ABB actively contributes to the energy transition by developing market-driven products and technologies. In doing so, the company not only fulfills its corporate social responsibility but also supports global customers in achieving sustainable development goals.
At the turn of the year, Xiaopeng Fan, Vice President of ABB China and Head of the Energy Industries Division for China, spoke with gongkong® and other media outlets, shedding light on ABB’s initiatives in optimizing energy structures and driving sustainability.
Embracing Innovation to Drive Energy Transition
As energy transition reaches a critical stage, numerous challenges have emerged. Fan noted that some technologies within the transition process have yet to mature, and commercialization remains costly. To address this, ABB advocates a balanced approach: maximizing the potential of existing fossil energy while integrating emerging technologies to drive decarbonization. Furthermore, enhancing collaboration across the value chain and between governments and enterprises is essential. This collective effort can advance technological maturation, reduce costs, and facilitate widespread adoption, enabling businesses to benefit from transformative innovations.
Acknowledging the coexistence of traditional fossil fuels and renewable energy during this transition phase, ABB adopts a dual strategy:
- Optimizing Fossil Energy Use: Helping clients enhance asset utilization and reduce carbon emissions per unit.
- Advancing Renewable Integration: Embracing emerging industries and technologies to reshape and upgrade the energy mix.
ABB is also pioneering in adopting cutting-edge digital technologies such as AI and digital twins. Collaborating with partners like Microsoft, ABB integrates these advancements into its digital and automation platforms. Notably, the company unveiled a groundbreaking Ethernet-APL-based process automation system at this year’s China International Import Expo, offering a 300-fold increase in data transmission speed compared to traditional systems. This innovation is already deployed in BASF’s integrated project in Zhanjiang, China.
Fan emphasized the collective role of industry players: “We must work together to push technological advancements, reduce costs, and make new technologies more accessible. ABB welcomes greater participation to seize the opportunities presented by the energy transition.”
Unlocking Data Value to Enhance Competitiveness
In the energy transition era, enterprises must not only focus on innovation but also harness the power of data. Fan observed that many businesses generate vast amounts of data daily, yet its potential often goes untapped due to limited digital maturity, constraining profitability.
To overcome this challenge, companies must embrace digital transformation. By elevating their digital capabilities, they can uncover new opportunities within their operations and production processes. ABB’s Energy Industries Division is committed to helping clients achieve this through three core strategies:
- Customer-Centric Innovation:
Using advanced Ethernet-APL technology, ABB has developed next-generation process automation solutions. These systems enable energy and process industries to better harness operational and asset management data, unlocking opportunities for decarbonization, efficiency improvements, and profitability growth. - Digital Enablement:
ABB leverages digital tools to optimize business processes, enhance operational efficiency, and improve decision-making precision. By focusing on the digitalization needs of existing clients, ABB accelerates their digital journeys, fostering sustainable growth and development. - Global Collaboration:
ABB actively participates in the Belt and Road Initiative, partnering with Chinese enterprises to expand into regions like the Middle East and Central Asia. For instance, ABB provided advanced control systems and electrical solutions for oil and gas projects in Saudi Arabia, empowering Chinese companies to thrive in overseas markets.
Partnering for Green Energy Development
Hydrogen energy, with its environmentally friendly, low-carbon, and efficient attributes, serves as a crucial bridge between fossil fuels and renewable energy.
In China, ABB collaborates closely with PERIC Hydrogen Technologies, integrating its automation, electrification, and digitalization solutions into hydrogen projects. Additionally, ABB has partnered with Baowu Clean Energy Co., Ltd. to explore process automation solutions based on Ethernet-APL technology, enhancing data utilization and operational efficiency while advancing digital and energy transitions.
To address safety and cost challenges in hydrogen transportation, ABB employs advanced digital tools. For example, ABB’s digital twin technology has been applied in an Australia-to-Japan hydrogen transport project, improving safety and boosting client confidence, thus accelerating the adoption of innovative energy technologies.
Fan highlighted ABB’s comprehensive focus across the hydrogen value chain: “We are extending our efforts beyond hydrogen production to the entire industry chain. For example, traditional energy companies are investing in wind and solar projects to produce hydrogen and green chemicals. However, converting intermittent renewable power into stable energy for chemical production poses a challenge. ABB’s Ability™ Optimax energy management technology stabilizes power inputs, ensuring the continuity and reliability of hydrogen production.”
Our Perspective
ABB’s multifaceted approach to the energy transition underscores its commitment to sustainability and innovation. By leveraging its technological expertise, fostering collaboration, and embracing digitalization, ABB sets a benchmark for industries navigating the complexities of energy transformation.
While ABB’s progress is commendable, broader adoption of these technologies requires a supportive ecosystem. Policymakers, industries, and individuals must collaborate to drive awareness, create incentives, and foster an environment where innovation thrives. Together, these efforts will ensure a sustainable energy future for all.
Through ongoing advancements and partnerships, ABB continues to lead the charge in reshaping the global energy landscape, paving the way for a greener and more sustainable tomorrow.
