Overview
The Triconex 3625 modules are designed for critical control applications, particularly where outputs remain in a single state for extended periods—sometimes for years. These Supervised Digital Output (SDO) modules meet the stringent requirements of systems with long-term, stable output states.
Each SDO module receives output signals from the Main Processors across three channels. These signals are processed by a fully fault-tolerant quadruplicated output switch, consisting of power transistors. The result is a single, voted output signal that is passed on to the field termination. This approach ensures that the output signal remains stable and reliable.
Supervised Output Features
The SDO modules are called “supervised” because they offer fault coverage that extends to field issues. In other words, the field circuit is monitored by the module, ensuring the detection of a variety of potential faults, including:
- Loss of power or a blown fuse
- Open or missing load
- A field short that could cause the load to be energized in error
- A shorted load in a de-energized state
The sophisticated online diagnostics and voltage/current loopback circuitry built into each module verify the operation of every output switch, the field circuit, and the presence of a load. This means the SDO module can detect faults without influencing the output signal itself.
If the module fails to detect field voltage on any output point, it triggers the power alarm indicator. Similarly, if it fails to detect the presence of a load, the load alarm indicator activates.
Hot-Spare Support
Another important feature of the SDO modules is their support for hot-spare functionality. This allows for replacement of faulty modules without interrupting system operation. However, the modules require a separate external termination panel (ETP) and a cable interface to connect to the Tricon backplane.
