ABB RED615 Line Differential Protection and Control Relay

Overview

The RED615 is a phase-segregated two-end line differential protection and control relay designed for utility and industrial power systems, including radial, looped, and meshed distribution networks. It is ideal for applications with or without distributed power generation. RED615 also provides protection for line differential applications that include a transformer within the protection zone.

This relay communicates between substations via fiber optic or galvanic pilot wire connections. As part of ABB’s Relion® product family, it belongs to the 615 protection and control series, known for its compact size and withdrawable-unit design. The 615 series relays follow the IEC 61850 standard to ensure compatibility and interoperability of substation automation equipment.

RED615 offers primary protection for overhead lines and cable feeders in distribution networks. It also features current-based protection for remote backup of downstream relays and local backup for the line differential protection. Standard configurations (D and E) include directional overcurrent protection and voltage-based protection functions.

Configuration Flexibility: The signal configuration can be customized using the Protection and Control Relay Manager (PCM600). It allows for multi-layer logic functions and integration with various protection functions to meet specific user requirements.
Protection for Overhead Lines and Cable Feeders: RED615 is suitable for isolated neutral, resistance-grounded, compensated (impedance grounded), and solidly grounded networks.
