Installation Guidelines for Internal Barriers in 3500 Rack

Purpose:
The internal barriers in 3500 I/O Modules provide explosion protection for transducer systems connected to the 3500 system. An intrinsically safe (IS) earthing module ensures the IS earth connection through the 3500 system backplane.

Key Installation Notes:

1. IS Earthing Module:
   • The IS Earthing Module requires a dedicated I/O position, which limits the rack to 13 monitor positions in a standard 19-inch rack.
   • This module precludes the use of the monitor position for other system modules.
2. Rack Configuration:
   • Internal Barrier I/O Modules and standard I/O modules can coexist in the same rack without compromising the separation between hazardous and safe area field wiring.
   • External Termination is not available for I/O modules with internal barriers, as intrinsically safe wiring cannot be used in multi-core cables.
   • TMR (Triple Modular Redundant) systems cannot use internal barrier I/O modules, as connecting transducers to multiple I/O inputs will compromise the IS system’s integrity.
3. IS Earthing Module Requirement:
   • Any rack with internal barrier modules must include the 3500/04-01 IS Earthing Module to provide the necessary IS earth connection.
4. I/O Module Positioning:
   • Internal barrier I/O modules are deeper than standard barrier I/O modules, so consider the rack layout for easy access during maintenance.
   • Ensure at least 50 mm (2 in) of physical separation between safe and hazardous area wiring.

   Positioning Guidelines:

   • Group internal barrier I/O modules in adjacent positions for simplified installation.
   • Place the IS Earthing Module in an easily accessible position for routine online maintenance.
   • If installing standard I/O modules or the IS Earthing Module between two internal barrier I/O modules, leave at least two rack positions for easy online access without disturbing adjacent modules.
