Description

Differential Expansion measures the axial position of the rotor relative to the machine casing at a certain distance from the thrust bearing. Changes in axial position impact axial clearances and are typically caused by thermal expansion during startup and shutdown.

This measurement is usually performed using a proximity probe transducer mounted on the machine casing, observing an axial surface (e.g., collar) of the rotor. It is commonly part of a Turbine Supervisory Instrumentation system.

The 3300/45 Dual Differential Expansion Monitor provides two channels of continuous differential expansion monitoring. It tracks both the magnitude and direction of differential expansion and allows four alarm setpoints (two over and two under alarms) per channel. Channel B can be turned OFF if only one location measurement is required.
